Description
- Location: Gallatin, Tennessee, USA
One of the earliest known figurative sculptures is the Venus of Willendorf, which I consider the ‘Mother’ of all anthropomorphic works. She is a faceless stone figure with a seed-pod-like texture on the top of her head. She was the first thing I thought of when I heard the word ‘Origins’. I've made facsimiles of her before, so I decided to do a jointed cloth ‘FloraFae’ version of her in my ‘crazy-quilted’ style. She is constructed from one of the earliest versions of my articulated cloth body patterns, and her hands are sculpted from wired nylon stockings.

AUCTION RULES
- All NIADA Auctions open at 12:00pm EDT time zone (New York).
- The 2022 “Origins” auction starts on Friday, July 15th, and ends Sunday, July 17th starting @ 12:00pm (noon) EDT.
- Closing times are staggered in 10-minute increments to 2:50pm EDT -- NOTE THE ENDING TIMES!
- All sales are final. Shipping is included. Currency: USD only
- Any auction items left unclaimed after 48 hours will be sold to the next highest bidder.
- NIADA reserves the right to add or withdraw items without notice, to or from the auction.
- By participating in the NIADA Auctions, each bidder agrees to these auction rules.
- To participate in the NIADA Auctions, please register and create a bidding profile with your personal information.
- You will need a valid email address to receive an email every time you are outbid.
- It is your responsibility to ensure that all the information on your profile is VALID and CURRENT. You may view and edit your profile by logging onto the NIADA Auctions website.
- All bids start at $100.00.
- The opening bid on each item must be at least the minimum bid listed.
- Each subsequent bid must follow the minimum increment of $10.00 and can be higher than the minimum amount specified.
- There is no proxy bidding, the bid placed is the current bid.
- No bids will be removed or lowered once they have been posted.
- Registered Users can bid on as many items as they choose, can watch auctions, and get email updates and notifications if they are outbid.
- Bidding continues until the auction ends or is closed by the admin.
- “The Precious” has a starting bid of $100.00.
- Bidder A places a $100.00 opening bid.
- Bidder B places the $10.00 minimum bid increment.
- The current bid is raised to $110.00.
- Bidder C places a $150.00 bid, which becomes the new current bid.
- Bidder A places a $200.00 bid, outbidding Bidder C.
- Bidding continues in this fashion till the auction closes at the time specified.
- The highest bid at the end is the winner.
- The closing time of the auction will be listed on each auction item page.
- Once bidding closes, the items you have won become your responsibility to proceed with payment.
- The winning bidders will be contacted to arrange shipment to the purchaser. Note: Shipping service interruptions due to COVID-19 may impact shipments among various countries.
- Payment for all purchases is due immediately at the conclusion of the auction.
- After an auction is over, the winner will receive an email notification with the payment instructions.

I’ve been sculpting, drawing, and sewing since childhood and have pursued dollmaking all my life. For more than 30 years I’ve explored the anthropomorphic genre of figurative sculpture and was the first artist ever to be inducted into NIADA with a completely anthropomorphic portfolio.
At the heart of my daily practice is an abiding sense of sustainability—a commitment to using organic, archival materials. My dolls are constructed like antique china dolls, with heads, hands, and feet or shoes directly sculpted from high-fire porcelain or stoneware clay (as might be done with a potter’s wheel), pigmented with high-fire ceramic stains, then fired in a kiln and finally sealed in pure beeswax. They are then sewn onto an armatured or articulated cloth body. Depending on my intentions, the costume is either fully removable or integrated into the doll’s body design.
